During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America.
During the Napoleonic Wars, a British frigate, HMS Surprise, and a much larger French warship, the Acheron, with greater fire power, stalk each other off of the coast of South America. Russell Crowe brings great intensity to the role of Captain Jack Aubrey. Lucky Jack, as he is referred to by his crew, is well regarded by his men, who trust him implicitly, even after the first devastating battle and an apparent personal vendetta against the French captain. While the naval battle sequences are quite fantastic, the film is successful because director Weir chose to build the story to get to know the men who are locked aboard the tight quarters of a small ship and how they interact everyday. The officers and the mates are well-known by the time the final battle comes. Paul Bettany offers a strong performance as the surgeon and naturalist who balances the violence of his chosen life with the quiet demeanor of the scientist. He is the captain's friend and confidant, the two frequently playing violin and cello duets together. The horrors of the injuries from the war are frequently implied, but vividly depicted in the reactions of the characters.
Eight Academy Awards?! Best Picture?! Go figure. Aside from the battle scenes, which I'm willing to concede may be some of the best sea battle scenes ever filmed, I found this picture to be a drag at best - long stretches of monotony followed by the brief excitement of battle. Now, that may well be a realistic portrayal of life aboard a warship, but it makes for a dull movie.

The picture revolves around the pursuit of a French warship in 1805 during the Napoleonic wars by the HMS Surprise, commanded by Captain Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe). Crowe puts on a decent enough performance, although he missed out on the Oscar. Aubrey is portrayed as a Captain Ahab type of character, with an obsessive need to find the French ship and take her. His alter ego on the voyage is the ship's doctor Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany), a naturalist at heart (really a pre-Darwin Darwinian) who would really prefer to be on the Galapagos Islands, where the Surprise weighs anchor for a while, studying the wildlife. The relationship between Aubrey and Maturin takes up much of the "in between battles" times of the movie, as the two try to work out the conflict involved in being good personal friends who have a strong disagreement about the pursuit while on the other hand dealing with the fact that Aubrey is Maturin's commander. Some find this relationship fascinating; I found it typical of the rest of the movie - dull.

Needless to say I didn't come away as a fan. For the marvelous battle scenes alone - 4/10.
There is much to admire about Peter Weir's adaptation of the British sea voyage novels, "Master And Commander: The Far Side of the World". It's absorbing, it's breathtaking, it's intelligent, it's glorious, and it's ingeniously crafted. This is such a sensational marvel of a film production that, if it hadn't been for "The Return of the King" stealing its thunder, "Master and Commander" would have certainly won many more Oscars, and perhaps even the grand prize. My only major complaint with the film is the story: at times tedious, and includes some ingratiating details (e.g. Paul Bettany befriending a junior sailor–-entirely irrelevant to the plot). This is an astonishing effort that sails both on style as well as substance. The acting is, as expected, pure dynamite, with Russell Crowe delivering yet another impeccable performance as the virtuous, vivacious "Lucky Jack" Aubrey- and plays this role with such spirit and conviction that he virtually steals the show as far as the cast is concerned. Paul Bettany plays a diffident, subdued role as Stephen Maturin, proving that he can be deftly serious and reflective to Russell Crowe's bombast and vivacity. The visuals, to say the least, are absolutely splendid- from the engaging battles of the ships, to the raging storms, to the flickering lights throughout these turmoils, one is really given a "taste of the perilous and spectacular sea" through some strikingly realistic effects. And speaking of being situated into the action, the sound effects are superb- the gunshots are vociferous and glaring, and it is often scary how terrifying these battles really are. The ship design is exquisite, and perhaps very exorbitant, displaying practically every detail one might expect to find in a British liner circa 1805. The costumes are fancy, genteel, and luxurious, and what else might one expect sailors from the Royal British Navy to be suited with? A far cry from the scrappy suits of "Pirates of the Caribbean" in that respect! I will say that my favorite scene of the film was the showdown between the Brits and the French- you are literally situated right in the center of the bloody action, and you realize that this is the ultimate pinnacle and quest of the story: what an engaging thrill! Featuring some brilliant and laudable technical design, fantastic acting, yet a somewhat slow and stagnant plot, "Master and Commander" is, above anything else, a masterpiece in modern film-making, and truly a wonder to behold. ***1/2 out of ****
Crowe – fierce, funny and every inch the hero – gives a blazing star performance.
